EK-Quantum Momentum² ROG Maximus Z790 Extreme D-RGB - Special Edition is a premium Quantum Line Ultrablock-class product designed for the ASUS® ROG Maximus Z790 Extreme motherboard. It features the high-performing and award-winning EK-Quantum Velocity² cooling engine, renowned for its low restriction and high performance. This monoblock's intricate design offers optimal cooling for the CPU, Voltage Regulation Module (VRM), LAN controller, and primary m.2 drive. Meticulously engineered, this exceptional monoblock represents the ultimate all-in-one solution, delivering outstanding cooling performance for a diverse range of processors, including the 13th Gen Intel® Core™ and 12th Gen Intel Core processors.
This Momentum² product is EK-Matrix7 compliant.

The EK-Quantum Momentum² ROG Maximus Z790 Extreme D-RGB - Special Edition is exclusively designed for the LGA 1700 socket-based ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Extreme motherboard. Its compatibility with delidded CPUs enhances its versatility, enabling the unlocking of greater performance capabilities. To ensure seamless integration with the motherboard, the monoblock utilizes a reliable pogo-pin connection, eliminating the need for additional cables and reducing clutter.
This Ultrablock-class product is built from two parts. The first is a massive aluminium heatsink, CNC-machined from a massive aluminium brick of roughly 188mm x 167,5mm x 50mm in size. This heatsink is attached to and cooled by the second part of this product via thermal pads. The second part is the actual monoblock that brings a plethora of advanced features. The monoblock base is made of nickel-plated electrolytic copper, while the top is made of high-quality cast acrylic material.
ROG Water-Cooling Zone
With a direct connection to the ROG water-cooling zone, the EK-Quantum Momentum² ROG Maximus Z790 Extreme D-RGB offers the convenience of comprehensive parameter readouts that provide essential information, allowing users to have complete control over their liquid cooling setup. This monoblock ensures seamless integration into your system.
Equipped with two integrated temperature sensors, it precisely monitors both inlet and outlet temperatures, enabling accurate measurement of temperature differentials.
Additionally, the integrated flow sensor provides precise measurements of coolant flow, empowering users to fine-tune pump speeds and achieve the perfect balance between performance and acoustics.
Integrated Bypass Valves
The monoblock features four ports, two of which are equipped with integrated bypass valves. This innovative feature offers the flexibility to choose from three different setups when building a PC, allowing for customization based on personal preferences.
Approach No. 1
In the first setup, the valves are closed, and the monoblock functions in a standard manner providing efficient cooling performance exclusively to the CPU. However, removing the valve plugs allows you to unlock two alternative configurations that offer increased flexibility.
Approach No. 2
In the second setup, you can establish a direct connection between the monoblock and the EK-Quantum Vector² GPU water block. Coolant flows through the monoblock into the GPU block and through it back to the monoblock. It’s important to note that the ports are compatible with all EK GPU water blocks except for the Strix 40 series GPU blocks which require additional fittings – 2 x 21mm double rotary offsets plus a regular 90-degree rotary fitting.
Horizontal GPU Mount
Regular (horizontal) setup is also compatible with Vector² Active Backplate Sets. It requires two 90-degree rotary adapters, two 14mm Male-Female extenders, and four fittings for Vector² GPU water blocks, and for ABP set no Male-Female extenders are needed. To use the ABP set an additional product – EK-Quantum Momentum² ROG Maximus Z690/Z790 Extreme I/O Cover – Black is required.
Vertical GPU Mount
Vertically mounting the ABP set is not supported. Vertical GPU water block setup requires 4x 90-degree rotary adapters, two 7mm Male-Female extenders, and four fittings for Vector² GPU water blocks.
Approach No. 3
Alternatively, in the third approach, you can explore an alternative setup using a distribution plate, such as the Hyperion Distroplate, to create a captivating and intricate liquid cooling arrangement, adding a touch of uniqueness to your system.
This setup features one tube coming into the CPU monoblock inlet port, while the monoblock connects to the GPU block through the outlet bypass valve, and after that, the GPU water block connects to the distro plate. Additionally, this setup supports both vertical and regular-mounted GPUs and is also compatible with Vector² Active Backplate Sets in regular orientation. Again, no compatibility with vertically mounting the ABP set. To use the ABP set an additional product – EK-Quantum Momentum² ROG Maximus Z690/Z790 Extreme I/O Cover – Black is required.
Anime Matrix™ LED Display Compatibility
The monoblock's aftermarket heatsink is designed to perfectly accommodate the motherboard's original ANIME MATRIX™ LED DISPLAY over the I/O shield. Made of black ELOX aluminium, this thoughtful addition preserves the motherboard's stunning lighting and enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the Republic of Gamers motherboard.
Hybrid M.2 Cooling
The monoblock's coldplate incorporates a specialized plate that acts as a dedicated heatsink for the primary M.2 SSD, ensuring efficient hybrid cooling and maximizing its performance. The specialized plate is constantly cooled by the monoblock's coldplate, which, in turn, is actively cooled by the circulating liquid passing through it. This design provides an effective hybrid cooling solution, optimizing the performance and temperature management of the primary M.2 SSD.
ILM Replacement Kit
This monoblock features the ILM replacement kit with a backplate and contact frame, which could be used to replace the motherboard's stock ILM, that bolsters the structural rigidity of the socket, motherboard, and even the CPU.
The replacement process is simple, involving the removal of a few screws to replace the ILM. Additionally, the kit allows for frame installation while keeping the CPU in the socket, protecting the pins from accidental damage.
Direct Die Kit and Delidding Compatibility
The monoblock offers a unique capability of transforming the cooling into a direct-die type, unlocking the full potential of the CPU. This technique involves the removal of the Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS) and the direct cooling of the silicon die using a CPU water block.
To facilitate this process, the package includes a specialized LGA 1700 delidding tool.
Designed for enthusiasts seeking enhanced performance, the EK-Quantum Velocity² Direct Die - 1700 Upgrade Kit comprises various components that work synergistically to elevate cooling capabilities and maximize the CPU's potential through direct die cooling. These components include a replacement coldplate, protective foam, jet plate, a new set of screws, and a black-anodized backplate with an attached ILM Direct Die replacement frame.
EK-Matrix7
EK-Quantum Momentum² ROG Maximus Z790 Extreme D-RGB - Special Edition follows the EK-Matrix7 standard. EK-Matrix7 is adding a new dimension to PC liquid cooling, where the height of products and the distance between ports are managed by increments of 7mm. This means perfect alignment of ports, less time planning the loop, bending tubes, and the result will still be an epic build.
